Mr. Magic Man (Emma, 7/29/13) Empty Mr. Magic Man (Emma, 7/29/13)

A man with what was likely a vaguely familiar face walked into the unique occult store. He didn't seem to be looking for anything in particular, glancing about and taking in the inventory that was on display. His skinny white tie was in a trinity knot, over black shirt and London fog jacket, and he carried a number of books under his arm. He moved with a casual grace that suggest a subtle arrogance, but he didn't seem to be turning his nose up at his surroundings. If there was no one immediately available to help him, he'd take a seat and begin reading, to find out what old Harry Dresden was up to this time.

A bell above the door rang, and in rather short order, the proprietress came padding down from the upper level with a smile much warmer and more outgoing than she typically displayed among social gatherings of magi. A long blue skirt moved easily as she walked on sandaled feet, a simple hand-beaded gray tank top half-obscured beneath a white wrap. When she laid eyes on Gabriel and on the pile of books that he'd brought with him, her smile halted slightly.

"Mr... Grayson, isn't it?" she ventured, stopping several feet away from the Hermetic. The Dreamspeaker's eyes scanned the man's appearance, trying to guess at his reasons for being in what was, for all intents and purposes, a rather humble occult and book store.

He was all smiles as she approached. When her own faltered, his fell away completely. It looked as if he expected such a reaction, and was disheartened to see it. He gave a gentle nod when she asked for a confirmation as to his name, and attempted a smile once more as he replied.

"Yes, that's correct. Though Gabriel works just as well, if you'd prefer. I...tend to stand on ceremony a bit less than some of my colleagues in the Order. I didn't catch you at a bad time, did I?" He looked hopeful.

"Gabriel," she repeated, willing herself to smile just a little bit more naturally at him. Even though the attempt to be more personable was decent, she still fidgeted with her hands slightly. Perhaps it was just attempting to socialize with someone she knew outside of the vendor-client relationship that made her uneasy. "Just caught me working." There was a grin that hinted at a sense of humor that she actually possessed. Shifting her weight slightly, she looked toward the stacks of books that filled the first floor. "Was there something you were looking for?" She tried to be as polite as possible, but it was difficult to conceal a slight amount of incredulity at the thought that a Hermetic could either not have access to some tome or component that was required and could be obtained in her shop, or that he might be browsing for "off-duty" reading material.

Dipping right back into a casual mood once she seemed a little more relaxed, he grinned back at her joke and tried to ease towards his topic of interest. "Oh, I wouldn't say anything in particular. I'd have to take a more careful look around. Always on the hunt for something of interest to add to the library, and it's so much more convenient when you can stop somewhere for components rather than having to pull strings to get them brought to you."

He seemed to make a decision to just push ahead to his reason for coming. "Ms. Quinn, I was wondering if you'd thought about expansion at all. My business is finances, and when I'm able, I like to invest in the 'community' as it were. I'm good at making my money work for me, and I'd be interested in helping it work for you."

When the Hermetic got around to his real reason for dropping by, the pleasantry faded from her expression again, but this time, it was replaced by anger instead of nervousness.

"No," she answered without hesitation. "I am not interested in giving anyone else a stake or a share in my livelihood. You presume, Mr. Grayson. My affairs do not need your meddling. None of the affairs of the Springbond need meddling from your Order, a thing you and your compatriots seem to fail to understand. I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that you're doing this out of a good-natured desire to help and be involved, but I'm not interested. I can manage perfectly well on my own and have been doing so for quite a long time."

It may have been the longest string of words that anyone outside Barrowspring had heard her utter in a long while. The Dreamspeaker's cheeks were flushed, and her hands were clenched loosely into fists.

It didn't take an expert to realize he hasn't expected such a response. His jaw nearly dropping to the floor, metaphorically speaking, said it just as well. He attempted to compose himself before he left, but shocked didn't begin to cover it.

"Ah. I suppose I should clarify before I go. I have no interest in purchasing your business, in whole or in part. I came with no intentions of 'meddling' on behalf of the Order of Hermes, and I'm not entirely sure what the Springbond refers to. I understand some of my Tradition can come off as a bit heavy handed, and if there's some happening I'm unaware of, you have my regrets. I have no compatriots where I live. I am unto an island. And I'm growing tired of talking to violently murderous werewolves when I'd thought I'd understood there to be some perfectly reasonable individuals nearby. Please, do have a pleasant evening, despite my visit."

Securing his books in the crook of his arm, he strode purposefully, if a bit still confusedly, for the door.
