When she found her way to his gym, Arkadi was standing outside, having smoked a cigarette halfway down. He snuffed it against the brick wall and held the door open to invite her in. "Please, please, out of the cold."

Ash's black outfit was fitted, complete with taupe ankle warmers, and black ballet shoes slung around her shoulder. Her dark hair was pulled back into a tight bun. The only things in her hand were her phone and her keys.

She made a mental note of his smoking while stepping inside as he gestured, giving him a shy smile. Not far into the gym she stopped, taking in the feel of the sudden temperature change. She looked around, taking in whatever sights there were to see.

"Is it safe to talk here? I had some questions."

There was an American and Russian flag side by side with each other on one wall and a mirror took up the other. The back of the room was separated by a bamboo screen, and the smell of Chinese food hung in the air. The floor was mostly taken up by a mat, and there was a punching bag hanging in the corner. When she asked about the safety of talking there, he held up a finger and retrieved some incense from the back. He lit it and sat in the center of the room, closing his eyes and breathing deeply. The smell of cedarwood filled the air and in a minute he opened his eyes again. "As safe as I can make it, without weeks of preparation. So what would you like to ask me about?"

Ash took in the scent of the incense like it was refreshing.

"Like I said before, I'm not really close to anyone in the city. With all of the dick jokes I make sometimes I'm fairly certain at least half of you don't know what to do with me."

She glanced at him. "But I was wondering how Evelyn was doing. Do you have any updates?"

He smiled when she mentioned dick jokes. "I'm less concerned with what to do to you than what you'd like done to you."

His smile faded when she asked about Evelyn. "Evelyn sacrificed herself to the hunter spirit that had been after her family and friends, so it could have the fourth generation life her ancestors promised it."

Color flushed her cheeks, but as quickly as it happened, she paled as if something still haunted her - all well before he mentioned Evelyn. She closed her eyes in an attempt to quell her suddenly churning stomach.

Mention of Evelyn was a reprieve for her. She looked at him, unable to confirm how he'd felt for the woman she'd known only a very short time. Closing whatever distance was between them, she reached a hand cautiously toward his cheek. "I'm sorry about your friend. It sounds final this time."

" Yes, it's sad. I saved her life the day she showed up in town, pulling her from a burning bar and stopping the hunters the church had sent to kill her. But she had been saved from death many times after, and even resurrected once. At least she went for the love of her son."

His giant hand closed over hers. "You are very sweet, you know that?"

"A facade, surely. Not long ago I was strange and playing games," she whispered.

She strained upward to kiss him, pulling him the rest of the way down to her. In that moment she wasn't sure which was the greater emotion; fear the nightmares would begin again or passion for seeing him bound with her nails raking down his back.

He gripped her, putting his hand in the archives of her back as they kissed. It was she he was imagining bound. You don't have to stop when you're with me. I'm always playing the game; unless I'm not." He kissed her again. "I'd like to see more of how this dancer moves."
