Passing Time

Post by Ash on Tue Dec 09, 2014 12:18 am

Late at night, Ash drops by the barn. Not finding anyone immediately, she pulls her smartphone from her pocket with gloved fingers. She's acutely aware of the vibration the phone released after she switched it on.

She scrolled purposefully through her messages until she reached Arkadi's number, and dialed. She listened intently, anticipating the sound of Arkadi's voice.

The accent that answered was thick and recognizable. "Arkadi's morgue. You stab them, we slab them. How can I help you?"

Clasping a hand over her mouth to control the urge to giggle, Ash just waited, silent, for about three beats. Then she hung up.

He dialed the number back, wondering what kind of game she was playing. If she didn't answere, he didn't try again.

Answering on the first ring, she just listened, not saying anything.

"You're a strange woman, you know that? Is there a reason you're playing games?"

The smile was evident in her voice. "It's been mentioned to me before."

She looked around the empty barn. "Me? Playful?" Her smile widened briefly, before she gave in with a disheartened sigh.

"I'm in a new city where I meet up with strangers twice a month, whom I probably should get to know better. I just wanted to see if you'd care for some company, but if you'd rather not I understand. I should probably get back to rehearsal anyway."

He laughed a little when she said it'd been mentioned. "You could do both at the same time, you know. I have a gym, but it can be a dance studio just as well, at least for a little while. I'd like to see you dance again. And if you wish to get to know a stranger, they don't come much stranger than me."

"You could say that again. You had my attention and then you vanished. I thought I heard an audible poof for a minute there."

She turned and opened the door to the barn, leading outside. The brisk night air against her skin made her pause, closing her eyes. She wondered how she was going to fit in with no other Cultists to understand what she felt.

"Text me the address. I'll try not to get lost."
