The Riddle of Steel (Tori)
The morning light had not yet come, but still the large man moved through the Hall. He knelt on the furs where he usually slept, and put a hand on Tori's shoulder.
"It is time to wake. Today is the day." he said as he gave her a slight shake.

She'd wake with a start, sitting up with a jolt and looking around. "What's wrong?!"
She'd look to her brother, worried something had happened. ~Is John okay?~

There was a pause before he responded.
~He is unchanged.~
He pushed her bed-tangled hair out of her face to better lock eyes.
"Today we work metal together."

She looks at him with groggy confusion. "Are you messing with me?" there was a sense of genuine eagerness.
"You are, right?"

"Heh. You have twenty minutes to be ready, and not a moment longer." he said before standing. He held out his hand to help her up.

Re: The Riddle of Steel (Tori)
Without further prompting, she scoops up John and gets up with energy she had no business having. “Come on kid, we’re gonna get ready!”
She headed out of the hall, with her brother in her arms, trying to get them cleaned up as much as she could, save for dunking either of them in the frigid stream.
She would return, hair pulled back in a low braid so it would be out of her face. She’d lay her brother back down and cover him with a fur, placing a soft kiss on his forehead. “Today’s the day…” she whispers to him. “I’ll tell you all about it.”

Beovyn watched her as she returned from the work bench against which he leaned. After a moment he turned away to face the bench, and unrolled a piece of paper. A moment later he spoke.
"We will be starting with a knife. I have some options for you to look over, and we will go over the method you select. Eventually we will cover them all, but we must start some where."

Her face is solemn, but her eyes are alight with attention. She'd nod at his comment. "Absolutely...where are the options?"

"Drop point, sabre, full and butt..." she says quickly without thinking too hard on the matter. Her eagerness was showing. "I want a strong, multi-use blade. Skinning, hunting, shiv'ing...you know...any use."

He nodded, and stepped over to the next bench. He grabbed a two foot long rod, and turned to face her.
"I know that you are not a novice, so I will spare you some of the most basic instruction. You are smarter than you allow yourself to believe, but I have faith that you will be able to adapt those rudimentary skills to my forge."
"I made this rod out of my own steel mix, and it should serve your purposes well. You well bend this bar onto itself to the desired length of your blade. Then you will apply the flux to hammer in the weld. Can you accomplish this?"

She takes the bar and examines it, she swings it about lightly, to get a feel for the steel. She nods. "But I need to do something. I will maybe look silly to you, but it is part of my process...is that acceptable?"

He raised a brow, obviously curious.
"So be it."

Re: The Riddle of Steel (Tori)
She seats herself on the floor comfortably next to the fire, laying the bar across her thighs. She grips either end of it and takes in three deep breaths, closing her eyes.
Over the course of nearly ten minutes, her eyes remain closed and she breathes in and out slowly, with thought and her fingers traced the lines of the metal. She turned it over again and again in her hands tracing end to end, all around the length and width of the piece.
After the process began to slow, she returned it to her lap, and took three final, steadying breaths before her eyes opened again.
She nodded and looked up at him with a questioning expression. “This is good work…”

He watched her closely as she sat with the piece of metal. His arms were crossed as he leaned back, guessing at what she was doing. He smirked when she spoke.
"You sound surprised."

She grumbles. "Stop that...it was supposed to be a compliment..."
She stands up and then nods. "I am able to try what you've asked me to do.."

He gave her a half-grin, and nodded.
"Once you have it bent we will apply the salts, the flux to begin the weld. Usually I would suggest you mix your own dried blood into the salts to suffuse it with your power, but as this, your first project, is promised to another, I would not in this case."
He stepped to the double bellows, and knelt down.
"You tell me how hot you want the fire, and I will feed it as you command. I want you to concentrating on watching the metal. It will show you what it needs, when it is ready to work for you."

She nods and slides the end of the rod into the flame, guiding Beovyn to the fan the flames up and she will lay out the tools necessary for her to begin her task.

He worked the bellows in a rhythm that sang the fire to life. It was an intense heat, but it did not harm the metal. It started to glow, and went from red to orange. Beovyn looked at her with a raised brow.

Re: The Riddle of Steel (Tori)
She picked up the tools with a graceful strength. She grabbed the archaic looking tongs and plucked the rod from the fire, now a hot red. With a practiced calm, she moved quickly to keep the metal moving before it cooled too much.
She moved the rod to the blacksmith’s leg and grabbed the shaping hammer.
With concise, smooth motions, she gently bent the rod over on itself and then over on itself again, taking time between the strikes, with a steady rhythm. Her face was lit by the fire and illuminated her focus.
With the last few strikes, her thoughts would turn to Beovyn. ~Stoke the fire again before I return….~ she asks, not demands.

He watched very closely as she worked, not interrupting her rhythm or thoughts. He nodded as she worked, seemingly pleased enough not to point anything out.
~As you wish.~
He knelt back down at the bellows, and returned to his previous beat.
~Tell me when it tells you its name.~

Re: The Riddle of Steel (Tori)
She returns it to the fire, heating the piece again, rotating it to gain an equal temperature. She doesn't look once to Beovyn, focused instead on trying to feel the heat, watch the steel. She'd keep note of any cool spots in the metal and the forge, and adjust accordingly.

He nodded in response to her thoughts, and continued his part of the work. Under his breath he whispered.
"Brokkr sønn av Ivaldi
veilede henne hamarr
varme brannen
smi metallet som du gjorde Gungnir som du gjorde Mjöllnir
Gi henne din styrke og ferdighet"

For the first time since she closed her eyes, she turned her attention to her teacher. "Am I doing it wrong?"

He looked up at her, and shook his head.
"Not in the least. I just called out to the Dwarf Brokkr to embower your work like he did Mjöllnir and Gungnir." he said in a matter-of-fact tone.
