Acceptance is a Hard Pill to Swallow (Open, 8/11)

Post by Dylan Gray on Sun Aug 11, 2013 11:35 am

He'd never been much by way of a cook. Tiff was the one who could work miracles with a spatula and a spice rack. Dylan had logged many an hour as a prep chef in his own kitchen, however, peeling potatoes and chopping carrots. It seemed a fruit salad was little more than peeling and chopping, so the man harvested a selection from the Barrowspring gardens, grabbed a large bowl and knife, and settled on the front stoop.

The young man had been neglecting his studies, but no longer. After nearly getting beaten to pieces by the men in the hospital, the young Akashayana had started to renew his own education. With his bare hands, with a pair of fluttery-light swords or even by sitting perfectly still on the green earth.

But everyone had to eat, didn't they? So, he came back toward the house with his accoutrements over his shoulder and paused near the stoop where Dylan was starting to assemble something fruit-related. Oh, he was glad to see that.

"That for sharing? Those strawberries are lookin' pretty good." he said longingly.

The detective took note of the warrior-monk making his way down the dirt path, and when Brent eyed the concoction, Dylan took knife to a strawberry, cutting off the leafy top and offering the meat of it upwards, the freshly chopped berry resting on the flat of the blade.

Once Brent had his sample, the older man shuffle-scooted to the side of the stoop so he could pass if he so desired, though it seemed Dylan had a thing or two to say. "Crazy weekend we had."

"Some of us had a crazy weekend. Do the whole world a favor and don't go dancing across that line again? I'd bet a lot that we won't be able to pull that trick twice." he said with a smile and reached out for that bit of fruit. He popped it into his mouth and chewed, talking with his mouth full.

"Isn't there a safer way to do that? Can't you keep a big mirror or something, one that's never reflected the sun's rays? That's how Sifu said those things work."

He retracted the knife and returned to peeling an apple, removing the core before dropping the slices into the bowl, one at a time. "There's always a safer way of doing things, if you can afford the time." He gave a toss of his head. "The good Doctor was around the corner, and I knew I couldn't get me and Yisrael to you in time for your exit strategy. Sorry to hear that didn't work out for you, by the way."

"Mind if I level with you for a moment?"

"Yeah, I think I got overconfident. The plight of the springtime youth." he said and nodded, gesturing in a beckoning way.

"Level away. What's on your mind?"

The watermelon was next. Since it didn't have all that crap most industrial farms put in that made it bigger, Dylan could manage it with one hand, and he cut a fairly straight circle, before making slices. He offered one up to the Akashik. "You've been good to me, and I think it's fair you get an understanding of how I think and feel."

"The weirdest thing for me this weekend wasn't getting dragged off into a Technoc's personal sanctum. It wasn't taking a trip through your own dream-world, or talking about werewolves, or having a sitdown with a centuries-old Viking." Dylan began turning the slices of melon into chunks, adding them to the bowl. "The weirdest thing was seeing the relief on your face, and the faces of the rest of the Barrowspring folk. All of you were genuinely glad to see me safe and sound, and I just don't know how to process that."

He accepted the bit of melon and sank down to his knees, settling into listen. There was no rush in any of this. No, everything happened in its time.

"What's there to process, man? You're our friend. You've been here making your way, being a fair hand out in the field and in the evenings. You've been laughin' with us and everything. It's not all magic and politics out there, you know? I'd hate to see you get hurt and I know you're not used to that. It's... just human nature to want to not lose someone, right?"

"It's one kind of human nature," he agreed. "There's others out there I'm more familiar with, and inhuman ones to boot." With the last of the fruit cut up, Dylan put a lid on the bowl, then shook it vigorously, tossing and mixing the salad inside. He set his concoction on the stoop when he finished.

"I haven't been actively developing my powers till recently, but I've been a Mage in the modern world for more than a decade. That's a full ten years of keeping my cards close to the vest, or getting hunted for who I am if I ever let slip what I'm capable of doing. Even before that, I worked for some folk who didn't much care to have me around, but made use of what I could do for 'em." Dylan wiped his hands on his jeans and sighed.

"I know how to deal with people like Munther. They're the sort that are quick to manipulate me, and twice as quick to toss me when I'm no longer valuable. I can keep up my guard with those folk. Friendship...friendship's something that got taught out of me a long time ago. Don't get me wrong. I can be a team player. I've run with allies and associates a-plenty. But friends...family...that's foreign. Relationships like those are often lethal in this kind of living, and I don't suspect I'll be warming to the idea of them any time soon."

"That's alright. A man can't turn his back on his stripes, after all. Scars have a way of being some pretty profound lessons, and nothing we can do is going to wipe that out. Maybe change your mind? Sure. But you can't move a mountain by talking to it."' he said, a bit of watermelon juice running down his chin as he spoke. He wiped at it absently with his hand, replacing the liquid with a smudge of dirt.

"Keep your guard up for as long as you need to. I don't think we're offended by a guy who's looking to stay alive. Hello, for Josiah and Hannah? That's the name of their game."

Some tension visibly left the man when Brent said his piece. Dylan glanced to the side for a moment, then glanced back, nodding slowly. "Glad we're clear on that. So that leaves the business of me and Barrowspring. Whatever my thoughts on relationships are, the lot of you are a family, through and through. That's what makes a place like this work. It's a rare thing, and it's a good thing." He paused.

"And it's something I can't contribute to the way you guys can. I'm happy to stay on as an ally, do my share of the work, and fight for this place. I just don't see myself joining the cabal. Not anytime soon, anyhow."

"Is that something you can live with, or should I be looking for a new couch to crash on?"

"Make no man walk a path without his shoes, they say." he said with an inclination of his head. Pursing his lips, he scrubbed a hand through his hair and then sighed.

"When a man decides to leave the monastery, he generally leaves it. Doesn't linger around because there's food and shelter. There are other places for that, better places. I know you'll work to keep up the walls on wherever you lay your head, but Barrowspring does kinda need that commitment. So, give it a couple days to sort things out, but you should be on your way after that."
