Taking a break (7/16, evening, open)
Beovyn had the doors to the hall open wide, and he sat in the frame watching the shore of the lake. With one leg slung over the armrest, he leaned back in the chair. Every few minutes taking a long swig of mead. He had been non-stop all day, and was enjoying the calm of the evening.

Re: Taking a break (7/16, evening, open)
The day had been hot, and setting of the sun had offered little respite as she traveled around, learning the lay of the land. Kat was used to colder climates, and quietly cursed and muttered about coming to a place so damnably hot. At least there was rain on the morrow. She could smell it, feel it, and certainly looked forward to it.
The lake had tempted her when she spotted it, enticing her to come cool herself. She kicked off her shoes, wading in a bit. It felt wonderful, and the woman bit down on her lower lip as she smiled. She went a little deeper still, kicking through the water, and making no small amount of racket as she splashed around.
Once she had managed to thoroughly soak herself, she moved back to the shore and sat. She took in her surroundings, looking to see what rested along the other banks. When she noticed the hall, she thought she could see someone in the open doorway. Her eyes narrowed as she raised a hand in greeting, wondering if she'd ventured too far.

He grabbed the shirt he had slung over the back of the chair, and toweled the sweat from his face, and chest. He had been to some hot places in his life, so the summer wasn't much of a shock, but he'd be glad for fall when it came.
He sat up a little when he heard splashing. Without thinking he rested his hand on the handle of his axe, which was leaning against the side of his chair. He could make out a vague form, that became clearer as squinted. It was a woman, and she looked like one he had met at the most recent gathering. It appeared as if she were waving, so he returned the gesture. It was a decent evening for company.

Taking the return wave as one of welcome, she grabbed up her shoes and walked towards the figure. Within a few steps, she could make out the features of the man they called Beovyn, and she laughed softly to herself. In life, there were few true coincidences, so the woman wondered at what had guided her here.
As she neared, her eyes took in some of the details of the hall. It was impressive, but she didn't stare within overly long. Instead, she focused on the man himself, and smiled when she was close enough to speak without yelling.
"Good evening...Beovyn, is it?"

Beovyn spat a chunk of whatever was floating in his mead off to the side as the woman approached. As she came into the light he ran his eyes up and down her form, and nodded to himself in approval.
"You have it right, though I am without your name.

The woman could tell she was being measured as she came up the bank, but continued to smile pleasantly. It didn't bother her, especially when she was doing the same thing, looking the man over in the light provided by his hall.
The hall... it tried to draw her eyes away; there was a timeless quality to it. Instead, she kept her gaze on Beovyn. When he spoke, she nodded before responding, her accent a little thick.
"Katrinkah. It was regrettable that those conversations were interrupted before I could give it. Especially when I think we are of like minds on certain things. Regardless, it is good to meet you properly."

"Yes, regrettable."
He let his eyes linger longer on her form than was commonly acceptable, but such things didn't concern him. He took a swig from his cup, and licked his lips as he thought to himself.
"You speak of the Draugr, do you not? Wretched abominations that should be scourged and scoured from the Earth."
He took another swig before continuing.
"Feel free to grab a chair and sit with me. There is plenty to eat and drink, perhaps good conversation, and the night is but a babe yet."

"Draugr? I am unfamiliar with this word, though I take it to mean what we would call a vurdalak or an upyr'. The unliving. They are an ancient menace in my homelands, and the reason some distant villages still fear to let their children go outside at night."
At his invitation, the woman stepped inside, searching for and finding another chair easily enough. It was large and well-built, and looked comfortable enough. Katrinkah paused, looking deeper into the hall. It certainly wasn't a modern home, but you couldn't call it a cabin, either. She'd have to make sure to ask about the decor at some point.
Turning her attentions back to the chair, her brows pulled together in exertion as she hefted it over next to her host. Settling down into the seat, Kat shifted, turning sideways so she could keep her eyes on the man. While he didn't look it, there was an old feeling to Beovyn.
"Have you ever dealt with one, an upyr' - beyond the meeting at the house?"

Beovyn kept his eyes directed towards the lake as she spoke. He nodded in affirmation when she said "The unliving".
"Yes, yes I have." He took another swig. He glanced at her as she muscled the chair around, and smiled briefly. He enjoyed strong women.
"My Mother thought she could control the Draugr. She even drew power from them, but in the end it corrupted her. Made her unclean, and evil. I was forced to destroy her."
There was a matter-of-factness to his tone, but it was touched ever so briefly with sorrow.

Re: Taking a break (7/16, evening, open)
Down by the lake, a man is walking around and enjoying the view. He sees the mead hall and smiles. He seems to talk to himself briefly before walking up.
"How picture-esque. Amy, what kind of structure is that." A reverse image search brings up several matches and sends the results to his glasses HUD. "Amazing. And wikipedia says that mead halls are likely to be the safest place in the kingdom. I like the sound of that."
Putting away his glasses, he waits for what he hopes is a lull in the conversation and walks towards the hall. When he is within earshot he stops and says
"Hello. I do not mean to intrude but this structure is quite amazing. Would you mind if I had a closer look? My name is Jon by the way."

Re: Taking a break (7/16, evening, open)
Katrinkah looked a bit saddened at the man's story. Not quite knowing what to say, the woman reached over to touch Beovyn's hand briefly.
"I've never encountered them directly, only having the stories passed down from my grandmother. She was quite the strega... one of the upyr' had taken her youngest brother when she was a child. She never forgot how it devastated her parents, and the fear that gripped the whole of their village. She focused her...talents on dealing with it..."
Her voice trailed off, noting the man approaching from the lake. Katrinkah quieted, as it wasn't her place to invite others into a home that wasn't her own.

Beovyn was as still as stone when Katrinkah touched him. When she pulled away to tell her story he took another drink. His eyes stayed on the lake, and he nodded as she spoke. He caught the movement of the man just before she trailed off. He let his hand slide down to his axe handle.
He sized the visitor up as he spoke. When he finished Beovyn cleared his throat and spat to his left.
"That all depends on who you are, and why you are out this way."

"My name is Jon Hubel. Most call me Doctor Ion. A pleasure to meet you."
"My car is in the shop and since I have never been to this geographic region I have been wandering on foot. I didn't mean to interrupt. From afar I thought this magnificent structure was a feast hall or themed restaurant or something with the fire going."
His eyes adjust to the light and he notices the other mans hand on a weapon of some sort.
"... But its not and I don't want any trouble so its probably best if I just leave." He takes a small step back

Re: Taking a break (7/16, evening, open)
"Doctor Ion..." She muttered the name quietly, thinking to ask a few questions about how he came across such a nickname. Science something or another, most likely. Kat wrinkled her nose thoughtfully, but didn't comment otherwise.
With as many things as she wanted to say, there was the matter of the axe that Beovyn had rested his hand upon. It had been impossible to miss as she pulled up the chair next to him, but hadn't bothered her. Still, it commanded the attention of both men, and she chose to remain still and silent while they came to terms - whatever they may be.

Beovyn looked between Katrinkah and the new arrival, assessing the situation through reading body language. After a moment he decided there was no obvious threat, and he brought his hand to rest on the armrest.
"A restaurant it is not. Drekisalr is my home, and a safe haven for my companions."
He took another swig of mead.
"Now, like you were about my great home, I am now curious about you. Come. grab a seat, and tell us your tale."

The man steps forward. As he gets closer to the entrance, he briefly stops and admires the homely scene. Grinning and obviously excited, he turns and sits down.
"Thank you. This place is quite extraordinary. Who built it? Are longhouses common in this area? This is the first one I have ever seen."

"It is a beautiful home - majestic even." Her head turned to look back into the hall. She wanted to look around, and wondered if this Doctor Ion's questions would coax their host into giving them a tour.
Turning back towards the two men, Katrinkah smiled, interested in Beovyn's response to the numerous questions.

His eyes flicked between his guests as he continues to evaluate the situation.
"I built it. I built it with the might of my arm, and fire of my heart, and there are none other like it. Not in these days."
He gave Katrinkah something close to a smile in response to her comment.

Ion looks back at the structure, nodding and obviously impressed. "Is that your occupation?"
He looks back towards the other two. "I am a chemist. But on my time off I enjoy traveling around the country. There is so much to explore."

The woman finally relaxed more in her seat, almost lounging now that the tension had left the conversation. Her head rolled towards her host, looking at him for a few long moments before focusing on the Doctor.
"And what do you make, chemist?" A brow raised with interest, wondering what this man's hands had wrought in the name of science and discovery.

"What do I make?" Ion was momentarily confused by the question.
"Fuel cells that use thorium, machines that can detect harmful radiation, medicines.... I guess a wide variety of things." He seems thoughtful.
"I never thought of it as making something. I take already known scientific principles and apply them."
"I have been working on a serum which will help people with certain diseases or genetic anomalies rebuild their muscle tissue. Though I have yet to be successful."

"So...medicine, then. This, I understand." While the details of his work would likely make little sense to her, she understood the concepts at which he was grasping. Satisfied, she made a noise in her throat, then quieted, allowing for other parts of the conversation to continue.

Once Katrinkah had appeared satisfied with his response, Beovyn spoke.
"My occupation is not easily defined."
He took a swig from his cup.
"I simply work to live. Each day that work is different."
